“Russian Roulette?” Zack Blast asked. Lady Zoe Thunder nodded, her beautiful eyes flashing crazy happiness at his words. “Why the games, Zoe? Why are you killing?”
Zoe laughed. “Me, a killer? What a lark?! You do make me laugh so much sometimes, Zack. Now, shall we play?”
Zack looked over at Andrew, staring at the rag stuffed in his mouth. “Yes. I’ll do it.” He went over to the table and examined the gun, making sure that there wasn’t some sort of trick and that it had just one bullet in its chamber.
Zoe arched an eyebrow. “I don’t cheat, Zack. I adore the danger.”
Zack nodded. “Fine. Let’s get this done. Who’s first?”
Zoe grabbed the pistol and spun the chamber, then put the gun to her head and pulled the trigger. An empty click echoed through the room.
“Perfect,” she said, handing the pistol over. “Looks like the reaper doesn’t want me to visit.”
Zack grabbed the pistol and put it to his head. This was it, he could feel it. He closed his eyes and pulled the trigger. An empty click answered him. He breathed out a sigh of relief.
“Maybe he just has a sense of humor. Your go, Zoe.”
Zoe Thunder grabbed the pistol and, smiling, blew her head off. Gears and burnt pieces of computer plastic scattered all over the room.
A robot? What was happening around here?
The sound of clapping came from behind him. A slow and elegant clap, made by a slowly walking and elegant woman. Lady Zoe Thunder walked out from the shadows.
“Well done, Zack! I knew there was a reason I was dating you. So brave. So powerful!”
“I think we might have to reevaluate our relationship after today’s events.”
Zoe pouted. “But we are having so much fun! And if you are getting bored, well, the games are almost finished. You are almost there! There is just one more to play.”
“I’m done playing games, Zoe!” Zack snarled.
Zoe clicked a button on her handheld remote and Andrew’s circle descended out of sight. “Too bad for Andrew, then. He sure looks like he might need some help.”
A large TV screen flickered on, hanging down from the upper edge of one wall. In it he could see Andrew struggling in his chair while water began to fill the room.
“The game is called hide-and-seek. Andrew is hiding. He has one minute before the water covers his mouth and nose. I suspect he won’t last long after that. The game is afoot! Can the great Detective Zack Blast find the way to his friend before it is too late? Oh, how exciting this all is!”
Zack looked about, his eyes flying here and there. He had to find a way into that room and fast! He ran over to Zoe and grabbed her shoulders, then shook her.
“Where is he?” Zack yelled. Zoe laughed and, for just one brief second, glanced at a corner of the ceiling.
Zack ran from her to the ceiling. There was a door there! A small string ran down from it. He grabbed the string and the door popped open, dropping a ladder. It seemed strange to go up to go down but Zoe seemed quite devious. He bet that was part of her trick. He ascended the ladder and found himself in a narrow tube that, sure enough, went over to where the room wall ended, and then dropped down like a slide.
On his hands and knees Zack made his way over as fast as he could, then slid when he hit the edge. He took three spirals, round and round, and slid to a stop before a metal door with a circular latch like those found on a submarine.
He grabbed the latch hard and twisted it open. There was a sigh of air and then the door swung free and water poured out. Andrew was there, alive and safe.
After spilling out into the corridor, the water continued to splash out and rise around them. Zack charged forward and grabbed the man’s chair.
“It’s alright, we are going to get you out of this, okay?” Andrew’s eyes were wide and shiny, but he nodded. Zack reached out with a knife and cut the tape securing him. Then together they ran, even as Andrew worked to loosen the gag in his mouth.
“Oh, ack, thank you Zack! I thought I was a goner for sure!”
They headed up the slide, their arms and legs pushing furiously at the sides of it and they went up and up through the three loops and all the way to the top. They heard the water burbling up behind them. Was it getting faster?
The two came through the ceiling hatch and into the main room. But here, too, water was now rising. It was coming from everywhere. And Zoe Thunder was nowhere in sight.
“We’ve got to get to the roof,” said Zack Blast. “Follow me.”
Zack and Andrew splashed through the water to the door to the place, but it was sealed. And there wasn’t time to try to break it open. So they half-swam and half-ran to the large TV and grabbed its cable. Using those, they were able to pull and swing themselves to a nice catwalk in the upper level of the large room. There was an exit door there that said, “Rooftop Level”. They pushed the door and went out into the light.
There, standing on top of the place, they could see the damage of Lady Zoe Thunder’s water trap. Here and there water had cracked the walls of the place and it was spitting out at high pressure. Andrew wiped sweat from his forehead.
“I can’t believe we got out of there alive! Zack, how did you know where to find me?”
When Zack didn’t answer, Andrew turned to look at him. Zack was wearing a creepy expression and had a faint but frightening smile.
“Often I forget. But now, now I remember. Zoe is just my accomplice. I am the killer.”
Andrew screamed and turned to run but it was too late. Zack Blast, the world’s greatest killer, claimed another victim.
